Hi all,

Sunday, March 30th, 2003

My name is Ray and I started the South Beach Diet yesterday (Monday).
I have tried a lot of different diets; some worked, some didn’t, but
I always put the weight back. I quit smoking two years ago and have
balloned. I have high hopes for this one. It seems to be sensible
and something I can live with. I will let you know how I do. It’s
great to have a support group like this.

Newbie with question

Friday, March 28th, 2003

Hello, I am interested in the South Beach diet but know very little
about it. How does it compare with Atkins if at all. I am headed to
the bookstore tomorrow to get the South Beach diet book tomorrow but
could use all the help I can get.
Thanks

newbie here

Tuesday, March 25th, 2003

Hello all. I am a 34 yo guy on the SBD since Dec. 1st. I have lost
20-25 lbs (depending upon the day that I weight myself). However, I
seem to have kind of stalled. I have been getting tired of the
recipes in the book, both from a standpoint of taste, but mostly
prep…they take so long to prepare in many cases! I have been
using Dana Carpender’s recipe books (500 Low-carb recipes, and 15
minute low-carb recipes) and have really enjoyed the recipes and
have tried to stick to the ones under 10 carbs per serving. I have
also been using Atkins products and other low-carb specialty foods
like flax pancakes and flax hot cereal (both are lower carb than the
oatmeal SBD recommends on phase two). I have the occasional glass
of wine, and never have more than 2-3 (I only fill them 1/4-1/2
full). I run 9-11 miles a week adn lift weights three days a week.
I want to lose another 20 pounds if possible–that would get me to
where I was in high school. Right now I am about where I was when I
finished my freshman year of college. The hardest part of this diet
has been taht my wife will not eat anything that has artificial
sweeteners in it. Anyone else the only one in your family doing the
diet? How are you dealing with this? Has anyone else stalled and
how did you get past it? I am still going down in pants sizes and
have dropped a shirt size…but I would like to see something I can
quatify on a scale…Thanks!

2nd Try - Help - I had tried SBD and lost 0 lbs!

Sunday, March 23rd, 2003

Hi,
Though discouraged, because on my first tried I failed, I’d like to
try the SBD again. When I started the diet on my first try, I was
very hopeful, I endured horrible cravings and except a few
adjustments (I’ll ask your advice on that) I followed it to the
letter, so I expected some results. After week one I had lost 0,
after week 2 I had lost 0… I went on to Phase II and after a week
on that I had lost.., you guessed: 0!
I gave up and have been struggling ever since with my own version of
the diet, and I managed to gain 5 lbs! (I wanted to cry!)
I’m not sure what I did wrong. I re-read the book and also just
bought and started to read the Good Carbs, Good Fats pocketguide,
and I now have renewed energy and motivation to start over, WITH
YOUR HELP, GOD BLESS Y’ALL…
PLEASE HELP ME, with the following:
These are the things that the book said that I didn’t do:
- I didn’t always had the mid am snack
- I didn’t always add veggies or meat to breakfast, but always eggs
(sometimes 2 or even 3)
- I didn’t always drink 8 glass of water, but close to.
These are the things that I did, that the book said I shouldn’t:
- I had low fat milk with my coffee, 3 times a day
- I ate quite a lot of nuts (didn’t really restrict the portions)
- I ate some low fat and also full fat cheeses, in moderation
These are the things that I wasn’t clear about:
- Could I have lunchmeat (ham, turkey, prosciutto, provolone,
mozzarella?)
- Do I have to restrict the portions of every meal, or should eat
until I’m satisfied?
- I used extra virgin olive oil liberally.
I really, really appreciate your help. If you could please give me
advice on the things I mention above. Thanks!

Has any one compiled a grocery list for phase 1 that would make
going to the supermarket easy???

Wanting to try this one out

Wednesday, March 19th, 2003

I was doing fairly well with it, losing about a pound per week until the holidays hit. We’re now only following it very loosely due to the TONS of rushing around we’re doing, but plan on heading back into it seriously after Christmas when things slow down a bit (at least all of the parties and Christmas shopping will be over by then, if nothing else).

It was difficult in the very beginning, but gets much easier over time. I’m slightly disabled, so cooking is sometimes difficult for me to get done every day, but I found that I do OK if I double some of the recipes and freeze them to have another day.

Have a GREAT day!!!

P.S. I do it…my kids do it…you can do it, too! As often as you
want, whenever you want, and you’ll even get paid for it!

Wanting to try this one out

Monday, March 17th, 2003

I was told by my doctor that this would be a good “diet” for me to
try because I am at issue with my weight. I wanted to know how
others were doing on their weight loss plan with the South Beach
Diet.
Thanks, Melanie

Newbie to SBD

No Maria, you don’t have to stick to the meal plans in the book. I haven’t and I have lost 14 lbs. Do stick to the meal foods foods tho and go by the glycemic index as much as you can.

Newbie to SBD

Friday, March 14th, 2003

Hi everyone!
I am new to SBD. My hubby and I just started today and so far so
good. My question is do we have to stick to the exact meal plans in
the book or can we substitute good foods in for what we dont like or
dont currently have in the fridge in the meal plans? Any helpful
hints are also greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Maria
