Digest Number 114

Thursday, October 30th, 2003

Welcome all the newbies,

It is good to meet new people.

The South Beach is somewhat different from Atkins, especially since they updated it to include the low-fat dairy and beans. I think his motive in lower fat is the belief it is healthier, although some diet makers debate this. I use olive oil and an oil called Udo, which you do not heat. It has Flax seed oil and other oils that are supposed to be good for you.Crisco and other hydrogenated or partially so are not good for you. It is good to give them up.

South Beach teaches you to use good judgment about portion sizes. They say “normal” sizes.

I usually eat the Ricotta cheese for breakfasts with 1/4 cup nuts.

I need to lose 10 more, and it is difficult because I go on and off phase 1 and have eaten poor choices. Seems some things make me retain water and I weigh more. I know I have not eaten 3,500 calories to gain a pound, and I have experienced gaining two or three pounds in a couple of days of eating wrong things. Then I lose it again fast.

If you have a lot to lose, I would recommend buying a source of recipes, because our worst enemy is boredom in diets.

You can decide it it is worth it to join his club and pay the money.

South Beach does not count carbs. He does not think it necessary. On phase 1 it is lower carb. No starch or fruit in this phase. You get used to lower carb. then you gradually add things back in later phases, but slowly.

diet updates

Wednesday, October 29th, 2003

I was reading posts of people complaining that the web site does not
offer updates, not sure if it was from this group or another I am a
member of….but I was just at the southbeachdiet.com website and at
the top of the screen is a link to the updates on the plan.
Just thought I would pass this info on….

New here and a bit confused

Sunday, October 26th, 2003

I am on day 2 of Phase 1 and am a little confused about something. I
have done Suzanne Somers, Atkins and Schwarzbein (all with varying
levels of success) and the thing that confuses me about this diet is
why he wants you to use low-fat milk and cheese when we all know
that cream and whole cheese has less carbs in it. Actually, none of
the 3 mentioned above even allow milk since it is so high in carbs.
I have done enough research to know that so far, scientists don’t
think that whole cheese and cream do anything bad to your body. I
was also really shocked to see that he recommends using I Can’t
Believe Its Not Butter. That seems like an awful lot of chemicals
to me–aren’t we better off eating food in its whole, natural state?
Don’t get me wrong, this diet sounds really good and I love the
Phases 2 and 3. I just don’t think it is necessary to do the whole
low-fat thing–I know you can do the cream, butter and regular
cheese and still lose plenty of weight (my dh has lost 45 lbs on
Atkins eating all of these). Any insights??

Pizza recipe

Friday, October 24th, 2003

First I took 1 tsp olive oil and sauted a small amt of onion, red
pepper, and black olives..until tender crunchy..then I put that in a
small bowl..in the same oil I sauted more black olive, and some
mushrooms.
then I took 2 ww tortillas (taco size it said) and placed one in
each of 2 olive oil Pam sprayed small pie pans..(so the edges would
come up on the sides a tiny little bit)..then I spread 1/4 cup of no
sugar added spaghetti sauce on each..
Then I added the bowl of onions, red peppers and black olives on top
of one.(this one is MINE…and the sauted black olives and mushrooms
on the other one..
then I added abt half a cup of pizza cheese (less than 6 gram of fat)
and on top of all that I added abt 8 slices of turkey pepperoni..
to each pizza…
Baked at 425 until the pepperoni was crisp..and the cheese browned..
took less than 10 minutes I think I just kept watching it..
The edges of the tortilla browned…and the cheese and the pepperoni
was brown w/o pools of grease like u usually get…My hubby’s
observation…
Made each of us a salad…
Quote from my hubby..*I have died and gone to heaven*
I think this one was definitely a KEEPER..does it sound OK to all u
mods?

I have been trying to follow the diet the best way I can, but I’m starting to
get some palpitations. I thought I might be low on my potassium, and I’ve been
drinking V-8 which seems to help. Anyone know what besides the tomato I can eat
to keep in balance while in Phase I?

sick from carbs

Monday, October 20th, 2003

Hi Everybody!
My name is Danielle,I live in Holland. I’v been doing the south
beach diet for almost two weeks and have lost two kilo’s so far. I’m
finding the diet very pleasing,I’v tried Atkin’s and actually gained
weight!
Everything is going very well. However one week into the diet,I had
a bad day,and gave into eating some junk food. Even though it wasn’t
very much that I ate,I felt quite sick afterwards. Mostly a heavy
feeling, tired, and even dizzy. My cheek started to itch and I
actually had a red blotch on my face that went away after about 10
minutes. This seemed very strange because I can’t recall ever
feeling so ’sick’ after eating high carb foods. I’v had that tired
feeling in the late afternoon when eating too many ‘bad’ snacks, but
I’v never seen my skin flare up,or felt dizzy. Have any of you guys
experienced this? One thing is for certain,I don’t want
to’cheat’again!

New Member Testing ISP; No mail coming in

Thursday, October 16th, 2003

Hi,,

I am a new member and I have sent two duplicate messages to this group in the last 5 - 6 hours, and nothing is showing up in my mail box. The only thing I have received is the moderator’s welcome. I am just checking to see why no mail is coming in from this group. I am receiving mail from my other groups and I am trying to figure out if aI have possibly set my account up improperly.

Thank you,

New Member; I Need help PLEASE!!!

Friday, October 10th, 2003

Hello everybody!

I am a brand new member and a brand new south beach dieter. I have a few questions but want to introduce myself first. I am 46 years old and have been a diabetic since the age of 9. I had a kidney transplant back in 1983, which means I now take steroids in order to maintain the kidney. That is not so good when you dont want to gain weight. :) I also recently lost my beloved guide dog, Jaala following a bout of cancer in her foot that spread and laryngeal paralysis and that has contribute to my weight gain as well. I have been blind for 23 years now and food is one of my pleasures and downfalls! I use a screen reader in order to use a computer and it reads the screen to me. I live in Georgia and down here, we cook things fat, fat, fat!

OK, I have been reading the SBD book on tape and I am a bit confused about a couple of things. My husband and I are planning on Sunday to be our begin date so I want to make sure I know what I am doing. The following things have me confused and I would appreciate any answers you all can provide:

1. In the book, it says that eggs are OK but yet it uses Egg Beaters in many of the recipes. This makes no sense to me. Can I use real eggs if I prefer? If not, why not?

2. It mentions that bread is a no-no except for certain types. Is this true in Phase 1 as well or do I have to leave all breads completely out until I get to phase II?

3. It talks of bacon, Canadian bacon, turkey bacon and other things. Is there any reason to use one over the other? Can real bacon be used? I dont mind for myself but my husband is gonna be one tough cookie if he has to give up his bacon and “real” eggs.

4. In the book I hear something called foods to enjoy. These included legunes and other beans, among other things. Does that mean that we can have as much as we wnat of these items in such recipes as chili, etc.? I have found numerous recipes on pages for Phase I entrees and now I am more confused than other as to what I am lalowed to eat and how much of it. The ook says you aer supposed to eat until you are not hungry gut I dont know if that means yu fdan have more htan one helping of a dish or if it means you aer supposed to supplemnt it wiht somehting else that is “legal”.

Can someone please give me just a basic easy to understand list of what is a can do list for Phase I? I hear the tape telling me that nuts and cheesses and meats are A OK to eat but Im not sure if that means you can eat as much as you want or is that limited as well? I listened to the meal plans for phase I and I see they list snacks and meals but I seem to remember hearing that you could have all you wanted of these things (the nuts, cheeses, meats). But it is saying 1 cheese stick as a snack. Am I totally wrong on this?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Once I figure out what our meal plan is going to be, I am going to make up a big list for my hubby to go to the store after and hopefully, Sunday will be our start date. Oh yes, btw, I weigh 217 right now. I put on 25 lbs. After I quit smoking this past December following a medium stroke which I am pretty much over now. No permanent damage other than I seem to have a bit of a problem in my throat, (vocal chords). Thanks for listening to all my rabbling.

Best Regards,

Lynn in Georgia

NEW TO THE GROUP-TIP

Thursday, October 9th, 2003

Hello all. I am new to the group. I have been on SB since 5/18 (10
days). Some days have been have been a struggle (especially when my
kisa want oatmeal and PB+J sandwiches, but I have held to the list
and not cheated once )well once I put 2 oats in my mouth, but I spit
them out! LOL) Anyway, I was reading the posts and someone said we
can only have 1 tsp of PB a day. I have the newest refernce tool
and it says that we can have 2 TBSP of PB a day (yes in phase 1). I
felt uneasy about eating that much, because i was afraid it would
stall my weight loss. So… I went to wal mart and there is a new
Peanut Buter out from skippy I believe, that is a low carb PB. It
is made with splenda (I’m not a fan of artifical sweentners, but I
can’t even tell it’s there). As a treat to myself, I get out a
measuring spoon (we all know we can’t measure by eye if we are on
this diet) and one at a time eat this creamy yummy “candy” right out
of the spoon. It may sound silly, but it is like eating candy.
Sometimes I stop at one, but even 2 is OK. It has not stalled my
weight loss at all. I started at 168 and I am now at 153 only 10
days later (15 pounds!) I’m not sure if this is typical but it is
keeping me going. I have only exercised one time too! Does anyone
else have any great tips that would help me feel like I’m cheating,
but not!
Thanks,
Jody

New to group and South Beach Diet

Tuesday, October 7th, 2003

Hello Everyone,
My name is Tameara and I just started the South Beach Diet. I am in
the process of reading the book now and I made an attempt at Phase
1, but slowly fell off the wagon. It’s pretty hard for me because I
don’t have much support. In any case, I’m hoping to get back into
the swing of things because I actually lost about 5lbs during the
first week. I’m looking forward to being a part of this group.
Tameara :)
