Subscribing and unsubscribing

Wednesday, June 30th, 2004

Hello Joyce,
The last digest discussed joining the online site, and I recall you
saying to Karen, it was worth it for a while and then when enough was
learned, one can leave.
I once ordered a skin product from Guthy Renker (called Proactiv) from
an infomercial and have had such trouble unsubbing (I hadn’t realised
they would automatically deliver this product every 2 months!) . I
*think* they’ve finally stopped, but it took almost a year to get
unsubbed and they had my credit card number. Since then, I’ve been
afraid to join any online thing. I belong to Dietwatch and enjoy it, but
am concerned that if /when I decide to unsub it could be the big run
around again. No email address available for unsubbing.
So was getting out of it truly easy, I’m wondering? Did you find the
site reputable in that sense?
TIA,
Suzan

low fat cheese questions

Monday, June 28th, 2004

Hello,
I wrote a while back while trying to get it together to start. I’m from
Canada and had trouble finding certain items. Have located liquid eggs
with 80 less cholesterol :-) (am trying to lower mine).
Still having trouble finding that turkey sausage. I bought some locally
made chicken sausage but it felt way too fatty. Will try another store
where it’s a brand name and they say the cholesterol/fat ratings.
One question perplexes me.
What is a low fat cheese? I mean, I find cheeses to try that have all
different milk fat %ages and just wonder what percentage of milk fat a
cheese can have (for phase one) and still be considered a low fat
cheese. I can just eat so much cottage cheese! Those mozarella string
cheese sticks are about 18%. Ricotta is about 7%. Are these all
appropriate? Or, if not, how do I determine it with the cheeses?
TIA,
Suzan

Dreamfields pasta

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2004

I’m new to this forum but I thought I’d plunge right in with a topic.
I’ve been reading about this new pasta from Dreamfields that claims 5
‘net’ carbs. When I look at the box, though, I see over 40 carbs and
some claims about non-digestable carbs. Has anybody tried this pasta
or know anything about it. Or does anybody know if SBD has a
position?
Looking forward to contact from fellow SBD’ers.

South Beach Website vs. The Book

Monday, June 21st, 2004

Just curious if anyone is a member of the Online version of the South
Beach Diet and if they like it or find it helpful? I am considering
the online version however, the only reason would be for the support
system that goes with and if I could get it for free outside the site
then I could save the fee for the website.
Any comments would be helpful in me making my final decision!
Thanks
Karen

NEW AND NEEDING ADVICE PLEASE

Sunday, June 20th, 2004

Good morning,
I’m new and just joined. Mom of 7 age 44 young.
I have been overweight ALL my life. Tried diet after diet a zillion
times and always give up…no willpower at all.
I do good for 2-3 days then blow it.
I am not ready to give up and admit I failed so here we go again.
I have tried Atkins and lost nothing. Think I took the “unlimited”
quanities to really mean UNLIMITED.
I’m going shopping today. I do not have the main South Beach diet
book but I do have “South Beach Diet good Fats Good Carbs Guide”
It is helpful but I always worry I’m not doing something right.
I do have a few questions please.
1.What about coffee? Can I have creamer?
2.what about protein bars or protein shakes? ( Slim Fast or Atkins )
I have found them helpful when needing a quick snack when out
somewhere.
3. Can a tbp of peanut butter be considered a snack?
4. How many snacks per day?
also….
In Atkins you count carbs.
5.Do I need to count carbs on south beach????
I’d really appreciate any help
Thanks

Snacks

Friday, June 18th, 2004

FYI - I found this comment from Dr. Agatston on snacks.
I found this at http://www.mizfrogspad.com/South_Beach_Diet/Chat_03-
03-04.htm
Member Question: How important are snacks? If you are eating the
proper foods for your Phase and are full at each meal, do you need to
have the snacks to promote weight loss or is it to avoid hunger?
Dr. Agatston: Snacks are important in Phase 1 to prevent hypoglycemia
and cravings. Once there is a weight loss and the disappearance of
cravings, then the snacks are not mandatory. Often early in Phase 2
it is advisable to continue snacks, particularly if you have a
history of midmorning, midafternoon, or evening cravings. Once you
are confident that these have disappeared, you can eliminate snacks
one at a time and monitor your response.

Phase 1- Plateau

Saturday, June 12th, 2004

Peace & Blessings,
I’m on my 2nd week of Phase 1 and I’ve reached a plateau. My plan is
to stay in Phase 1 for another 2.5 weeks (until my yearly physical).
I’ve been stuck at the same weight for a week. I recently starting
walking on my treadmill, but I haven’t started weight training yet,
so I don’t think I’m building muscle yet.
Here is my basic eating plan:
I don’t eat breakfast, I’ll usually just grab a slice a turkey breast
and cheese as I run out the door in the morning. I’ll have a cup of
coffee with Splenda.
I may eat 15 almonds or a cup of SF jello.
I eat lunch which consists meat/salad or meat/greenbean stir fry.
Dinner: is basically the same as lunch.
I snack again on a cup of SF jello
Oh & I drink a lot of water and rarely drink diet soda
Am I doing anything wrong? What do I do to break the plateau and get
back to losing?
Thanks,
Nia E.

Sugar substitutes

Friday, June 4th, 2004

Greetings. I’ve just started the SBD, but I’ve been on a controlled-
carb (not low-carb) plan for 5+ years. I have not used any type of
sugar substitute in over 4 years, and I have no plans to start using
them at all. Not even Splenda :-).
In the WOE that I’ve been following, I don’t eat refined sugar, but I
can eat small amounts of honey & pure maple syrup as part of a
balanced meal containing protein, vegetables & carbs. I don’t eat
them every day, but they’re allowed. I realize that on SBD, even in
phase 2 honey is listed as “avoid or eat rarely,” which is fine with
me and I will comply with it.
Does anyone have ideas for dessert-type foods that are truly sugar- &
sweetener-free? I can think of ricotta or yogurt w/nuts mixed in, and
in phase 2 I could add chopped apricots or other fruit, but that’s
the end of my inspiration! Diet Jell-O and puddings are out, of
course.
I’m very much looking forward to learning from all of you!
Thanks for any ideas.
Carmen
