Newbie from Texas!!

Sunday, August 29th, 2004

I just bought the little $6 paperback today. But I see it doesn’t
have nearly the info I need to get started. Can anyone assist here
with that part. I see their is a phase 1, how long are we are that?
And how do I know how many carbs etc that I am to have a day etc.
Need some serious guidance here.
I am 31 years old, mother of 6( two step boys ages 14,15, mother of
one adopted girl 18 and new Grandma to her baby boy, mother bio to
three ages girl 3, girl 9 and boy 12) Currently been in college for
two years full time and now in the Registered nursing program. Just a
little highlight of who I am.
Thanks
Jennifer

And yet…another Newbie

Wednesday, August 25th, 2004

Hi everyone,
I’m Sharon and I need to lose weight. My partner was told to go on
the South Beach Diet and I’m going along too. We both have to lose
weight big time.
I’m 53 years old and would very much like to see 60!! I’m not an
active person at all. Never have been. I was on Atkin’s once and
for that month I did very well. I went on it with my Mother and Step
Father and I lost the most…but I hated eating that way. If it were
up to me I wouldn’t eat meat at all much less the tons of it Atkin’s
plan seems to think is ok. I got cravings for fruit!! Forget candy
and cake…I just wanted an orange!! It was too restrictive and I
just can’t live that way. My mom got me the South Beach book and it
sat on the shelf for a long time. When Mary’s doctor told her she
needs to go on it, we dusted off the book and began to get serious.
I think I’ve done every diet out there and I would guess they all
work if you just stay on them. I’m also sure I have lost and gained
a ton over the years. At this point in my life I see it as a serious
threat and one I need to address NOW.
For exercise I am going to do the Leslie Sansome Walk Away The Pounds
because it’s too scary to walk…I’ve had several leg injuries and I
am afraid to walk on the street. The last time I got hurt, I tripped
on a stone, my ankle twisted, my knee dislocated and I
fell…needless to say I didn’t walk again for a few motnhs. I’m not
eager to repeat that. I have tried the tapes and they’re good so
I’ll stick with that.
That’s my game plan. This is not a New Year’s Resolution. Those are
usually forgotten quickly. This is just something I need to devote a
lot of time and energy to. Not just for me but for my partner too.
Good luck to everyone,
Take care,
Sharon

newbie here!

Tuesday, August 24th, 2004

Hi everyone! I’m a newbie to the group, but not new to SB. I’ve
done SB once before and then “fell off the wagon” this was back in
April of this year. Unfortunately I was only on SB for one month.
I know I’ll do well as I’ve done Atkins before and had pretty good
success (lost 45 lbs) and kept most of it (all but 15) off. SB is
much more tolerable for me, less chances to get bored and easier to
shop and cook for. Plus I love how there isn’t any numbers (well
there are some) but it’s…to me…a real way of life.
I guess I’ll tell you a bit about me. My name is Sarah, I’m 29 year
old, married and have an 11 year old son. I’m currently at a
disgusting 265 lbs. My goal weight is between 130-150. I haven’t
been there in so long I forget what “good” looks like. Mostly for
me I just want to be healthy. I have a bunch of med problems
(arthrtis and athsma) that need me to lose the weight too. Not to
mention I want to survive my next 50+ years and be able to get
around during retirement.
I’ve been doing SB kinda sorta for the last three weeks. What with
the holidays and all I’ve been rather leinent. See, my Father-in-
Law ended up in the hospital and was diagnosed with congestive heart
failure, severe diabetes (sores on his feet), high blood pressure
and sleep apnia. The man is single and doesn’t take care of
himself. He’s only 54 and I don’t want him to diet. So, we decided
we’d begin to prepare and provide ALL of his meals and snacks for
him. It’s been an adjustment…but it’s better for the whole
family. DH is about 35-40 lbs overweight and is borderline
diabetic…and we need to instill good eating values in DS…so, off
we go!! I had my “last meal” tongiht and am prepared with a cleaned
out kitchen (clear of junk!) and stocked full of fresh produce and
good foods for ya! Phase I for me starts tomorrow AM!
Sarah
PS, sorry for the long intro and for rambling! LOL

New, Some Phase 1 Questions…

Thursday, August 19th, 2004

Hello! I’m new to the group. My husband and I will be starting the
South Beach Diet this weekend after the New Year’s Party. We are
looking forward to it and it seems very reasonable, but I have a few
questions.
First, does anyone subscribe to the South Beach website? Is it worth
$5/week? What do you like/not like about it?
Also, I was wondering if anyone had any info about using the
following foods in Phase One:
-bell pepper
-onions
-garlic
I read the book last week, but don’t remember seeing this on the
lists, one way or the other.
Thanks so much!
Michelle

Atkins & SB, whats the diff?

Monday, August 16th, 2004

I was on Atkins a year ago and lost about 30lbs. But I wanna try
SB. What is the difference? Needless to say it is back.
I am on antidepressants and as soon as I leave the diet I put the
weight back on anyone have any ideas for this?
One question more while I was on Atkins, I could not work out. I
just had no extra energy, making it through my day was fine. Anyone
have ideas on how to alleviate this problem?
Thanks,
Wendy

New to list

Saturday, August 14th, 2004

Hello,

I have just joined this group. I am doing my research and trying to find my South Beach Diet book so I can begin Phase 1 for my New Year’s resolution.

I don’t usually do the New Year’s resolution thing, but this year I decided that it was something I needed to do just to get that bit of a motivation that seems to be lacking.

My hope is that this list will offer the occasional kick in the butt I need. I am 60+ and one stubborn lady.

1. Tosul and the Coffee Go ahead an have the regular milk. It’s
only a couple of teaspoons so why deny yourself? I’ve found that
giving myself this kind of little `treat’ make SBD much more
tolerable. As for Spenda, I like Equal better but that’s just my taste.
2. Joyce I think two weeks is plenty for phase 1. Remember, the
purpose of phase 1 is to de-toxify you system not as a regular diet.
If you lost 10 lbs on phase 1 that’s great (I only lost 8) but you
can’t expect to maintain that pace. I’ve lost another 12 over the
past 2 months on phase 2 and 1 or 2 lbs a week is really what you
should aim for. Weight you take off slowly tends to stay off.
3. Everyone “good bread” thanks for the suggestions. I’ve tried
the low carb bread but, man, I’d rather eat the bag it comes in. I’ll
look for regular multi-grain with lots of fibre. Maybe I’ll even try
making it myself. I’ve been making muffins from oat brand and flax
seeds and they are pretty good.

Please help

I have only heard of the south beach diet on occasion. Is there
somewhere I can find the actual diet? Am I supposed to buy the
literature somewhere before I start?
I am WAYYYYYYYYYYYY overweight and need all the help I can get to
loose this mess before I have a heart attack.
OH by the way, my name is Alyce, and I thank you very much

Is there a “good” bread?

Sunday, August 8th, 2004

I have found a 12 grain bread the a store here in RI makes. It is really great
toasted. It has pieces of sunflower and other grains in it. The store is Stop
and Shop. It is there brand. It fits perfectly.
Glad to see there is someone on this site!!!!!

a question about dairy products.

Thursday, August 5th, 2004

Hi, I just joined the club the other day. I’ve been on the diet now
for about a week and a half. I stuck at the 4 lb mark for quite a few
days, kinda wondering why I didn’t lose more. Then i stopped all
dairy products and i promptly lost 2 more pounds.Does anyone here
have problems with dairy products keeping them losing?
