no weight lost after 1 week help!
Does anyone know if medications can affect lost of weight? I have been on the
sb diet for 7 days. I did not cheat.I followed it to the letter. I have not lost
1 pound. In the past I have tried the
atkins diet with the same results. Does anyone have any input on this subject?
I sure can use some help.
Thank you.

Dear Mrs. Whittytwo, Certain medications can cause weight gain and prevent weight loss. You can look up the side effects of the medicine that you’re taking to see if that’s the problem. I was successful controlling my weight until the birth of my third child at age 36. For years after that I faithfully dieted and exercised with poor to no results. I asked several doctors if the problem could be my thyroid and I always told my thyroid was fine, my TSH was in the middle. Eventually about 18 months ago I insisted on a referral to an endocrinologist. The Endo ordered a sonogram of my thyroid which showed 12 nodules. I had my thyroid removed and started taking synthroid. Now what ever diet I try works. The moral of my story being, if you are faithfully dieting and exercising with no results, don’t let the medical profession brush you off. Good luck.

My wife and I tried SBD some time ago. I lost 9 pounds in phase 1, then as
soon as I added a slice of whole grain bread and half an apple to my
breakfast, I stopped losing, then gradually gained back what I had lost and
then some. My wife had similar results. As you say, discouraging.
We had a similar experience on Atkins some years ago. We had to stay at
induction levels or we started gaining the weight back. As Dr. Agatston
points out when he recommends limiting Phase 1 to two or three weeks, it’s
very hard to stick with such a strict regimen for a long period of time.
I knew we had to get back on a diet after the holidays, and SBD has been
the plan that has been most comfortable to stick to for me, but if I don’t
lose weight then it sort of misses the point. Furthermore, I was dreading
starting Phase 1 again, and then I saw a post here from someone who simply
started on Phase 2, and I thought it was worth a try.
We’re really picking and choosing parts from both Atkins (past induction)
and SBD Phase 2. We’ve been doing it for a week. I am watching carbs, but
not counting them. I’m trying not to kill myself over limiting fats, but
do so where it’s easy and convenient, and use olive oil wherever I can.
I’m eating carrots and tomatoes (Atkins no-nos), but keeping the portions
of them small. I’m planning to make some hummus, another Atkins no-no.
I’m controlling my sweet tooth with sugar-free fudge whose recipe I got
while on Atkins before - it has cream cheese at its base, so it’s not
really SBD friendly, but it really stops my craving for sweets. I even had
a couple of tablespoons of mashed potatoes one night with my dinner
(although that’s about the only white starch I’ve had all week). We have
wine with dinner, and even ate barbecue out, and had limited amounts of
barbecue sauce, as well as two light beers.
We’re following a lot of the principles of SBD (for example, the idea that,
rather than shooting for ketosis, you simply reduce your calorie intake by
using protein and fat to keep your appetite in check).
Anyway, I’ve lost 15 pounds this week, and my wife has lost 5. I’m
thinking that the idea of cleansing the system or shocking it into some
sort of reset mode with induction/phase 1 isn’t the best way to do it for
everyone. I’m really happy with the results so far, and it’s much easier
for me to stick with this plan than anything else I’ve ever tried. We’ll
see how it goes after I’m done with the water loss phase of this, though.
Just my two cents…

It may have to do with how much overweight you are, too. I was 60 lbs
over my “ideal” weight and lost 8 lbs in phase 1, which was about 13%
of my extra lbs. Now I’ve lost 24 lbs since September (40%!
Woo-hoo!). When I started I thought my “ideal” weight was out of
reach and would have settled for losing 40 lbs but now I think I may
be able to lose all 60.

I’m new to the list, and am only on day 5. Not sure if I’ve dropped
any weight yet or not - maybe a pound. But I have noticed in
talking to people and reading online that people seem to interpret
the instructions of the diet differently, so that could be part of
it too.
I am following the 14-day phase 1 menu laid out in the book. To the
letter. If it says eat celery as my snack, I eat it. Also, the
portions are important. When you make dishes from recipes in the
book, note the # of servings, and dish out accordingly. The first
morning I made an omelette, and ate the whole thing (which wasn’t
THAT big), and then realized that it was meant to serve 2!!!! Oh,
well.
I gotta tell you, I used to hate sugar substitutes and now they’re
my best friend. Sugar-free jello is my absolute favorite dessert -
it’s like getting a sugar fix w/out the sugar. That’s helping me a
lot. Also, the mocha riccotta dessert is GREAT! I am, however,
sick to death of salads! And don’t eat red meat, so I’m limited to
chicken, fish, and seafood. Maybe that’s how you lose weight - you
get so bored/sick of it, that you aren’t hungry anymore LOL!!! (I
wish, right?).
Just my $0.02.
