Here is my SBD introduction and more importantly…my request!

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

I would like to praise you for wanting to assist you brother. Please let him get to where he needs to go support don’t nag. I don’t have any idea what you are doing I just know it is much easier to succeed when it is my idea not that of someone else.

I would invite him to join us himself. We are all here because we see the benefit of SB. He can share experiences with us and we will welcome him.

I have lost over 40 lbs and I am sure this works. I am keeping at this longer than anything else I have tried so I would encourage him to join us and learn from us. It is better first hand. I did look at his blog. I don’t have time to read it all tonight.

Good luck to you both.
Pam

I have tried to help my brother lose weight on countless occasions.
He has participated in a few diets¡Kand in turn given up. Exercise
has been tough for him to implement on a continual basis. I have
even pleaded my desires for my brother¡¦s weight loss to heaven. Yet
he is still in very poor shape. Due to this background, I introduced
him to the South Beach Diet on Sunday.

Dr. Phil was: Phase 1 again

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

The links that were provided to Dr. Phil’s site really show what he thinks. He intends it to be a diet. I think the 7 keys are very helpful in setting up my thinking and my environment. I just did not quite understand the diet. I tried it for a while. But, one day I went looking for recipes and borrowed my MIL SB book. It made so much sense to me. So I switched to that for my eating portion. It works for me. I feel good and my weight is going down.

I discussed it with my Dr. and he was happy with my choice in diets. That is good since I am diabetic.

Dr. Phil says he deals with the whole person not just the weight. It was very helpful. You know things like creating a “NO Fail Environment”. You can’t eat what is not there ect. It was a good idea and helped me a lot.

Pam

Ok, isn’t Dr. Phil’s diet more his ‘philosophy’? or is it an actual eating program??

I have not read his book.

Here is my SBD introduction and more importantly…my request!

Monday, July 24th, 2006

I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is DK and I
just joined the group. I live in Boise, Idaho and I have been on the
diet for officially one week. I¡¦m writing this message to introduce
myself, and at the same time¡Xintroduce my brother and some of his
struggles to the group.
My background is pretty boring. I¡¦m pretty athletic. I played sports
in high school, and I have continued to be very active in sports
(basketball, triathlons and marathons) for the past several years.
It is fortunate that I¡¦m active, because the second I stop
exercising¡Kmy weight balloons. I fluctuate around 225lbs. I¡¦m 6¡¦2.
I decided to participate in the diet when I heard several family
members were taking it on. I like a challenge, and thus entered the
diet full bore. In my first week, I lost 9 lbs. I was happy with the
results and I felt like I had plenty of energy in my training and
exercise. I also never felt hungry which is key. This is where I¡¦m
at with the diet (I¡¦m eating a cheese stick as I type º )
Now, I want to address a more serious issue. I have an older brother
that I care about very much. We have always been close and share
similar interests. Yet, he has let his body get away from him. At
one point, I believe he weighed around 400lbs if not more. Yet, he
has had the gastric bypass surgery and reaped the benefits of that.
Yet, the benefits of that surgery are over. He now weighs around
350lbs. At one point, I think we was close to 300lbs. Yet, he has
gained quite a bit back. I would guess he is only around 5¡¦9¡¦¡¦ and
has the ever popular ¡§apple shape¡¨ referenced in the South Beach
Diet.
My motive in helping him revolves around so many factors. He is a
great guy. He is smart, happy, and likable. Everyone seems to enjoy
him. He has not become discouraged or depressed. In fact, I think in
his mind he really believes it is only a matter of time until he
turns the corner on his weight. I¡¦m hoping the diet will help. I
want him to have a full life. I want him to feel good. I want him to
be healthy enough to see his three kids grow up and get married. He
is only 36. He has so much life ahead of him. It is one thing to
survive life¡Kbut I want him to thrive in life. I want him to enjoy
things like swimming with a shirt off, or playing basketball, or
completing a triathlon. He talks about the rude comments he gets, or
how he can¡¦t run after his son¡Kwhen his son is headed for a busy
street. These factors drive me to help him. These factors are part
of the reason I joined this board. I¡¦m hoping to find support for
him.
Like I said, I have tried to encourage him on so many levels. One
step I took was setting up a blog for him. The blog is at
www.nomorecryingwolf.blogspot.com. The only reason I post the blog
site is because I¡¦m curious how some of you would respond to the
criticism he is getting over his participation in the South Beach
Diet. The blog basically has his daily efforts to lose weight. This
week he has stated that he is going on the South Beach Diet. The
reply that he is getting is very harsh. Multiple posters are
discouraging him from the South Beach Diet for various reasons. I am
new to the South Beach Diet, and I feel like the plan is pretty
scientific and basic. Yet, I¡¦m not sure how to reply to my brother
in relation to the South Beach Diet. If we can get a thread going on
how to respond to criticisms of the South Beach Diet¡Kor if someone
wants to reply to some of the negative comments on his blog¡Kfeel
free to¡Kand while you are at it¡Kencourage my brother that the South
Beach Diet is not a fad. Again, my only motive in posting this is to
help my brother.
Thanks

Butter Nut Squash?

Does any one have any idea if Butternut Squash is allowed and in which
phase?

Baby Exercise was New to SBD with question

Saturday, July 15th, 2006

I had an exercise idea for you. Please forgive me if I have already said it before. But, a little is better than nothing. I wanted to exercise when one of my little ones was uncooperative. I just put on upbeat music sometimes kids music sometimes Beach Boys. Whatever you like that is fast and then dance around and play with the little one for about 30 minutes. It is not the same as an aerobics class or tape but hey it makes you feel good and the baby smile.

Enjoy the baby.
Pam

Not regularly. My baby gets up before 7 am, and stays awake for a few hours before napping. I homeschool my kids, so you’d think I could take time out for PE.. well, I could never seem to get that in, so I signed them up for martial arts. We do that 3 afternoons / week.

I know this is no excuse, but I’m really so exhausted that I can’t make myself do exercise… although I’m so envious of my kids and all that they can do.(The girls have not even belted yet, but I’m convinced they could hold their own in an attack - WONDERFUL self defense for teen girls!!!) It’s my intentions to have the teen girls ‘work-out’ with me in the mornings, and ‘teach’ me martial arts as they learn them. Maybe when the baby gets older. It’s getting better weather, too, so maybe I can start taking baby Rob out and putting him on a blanket while we work out.

Thanks!

Phase 1 again

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

Tomorrow I am starting PH. 1 again. Anyone thinking of doing this and want to join me? I have been in limbo for the past few weeks. I want to start with the first phase again. So here I go again.

I spent some time doing training where the food was not what I choose so I just made the best of it. I want to get back to work and this will give me a definate and clear start.

I was goiing to start today but, I am sick and so I am not eating much and it was food that my husband bought while I was gone at training.

Want to share my good mood

Wednesday, July 5th, 2006

Hello everyone,
I started phase 2 yesterday and I am plesantly surprised at the way I
have been able to adD fruit and yogurt etc without cravings! I think
I
have also come up with a solution to a temptation problem I was
worried
about - MY BIRTHDAY!!! Instead of going out for supper etc I’ve
decided
to throw a SB friendly dinner party to celebrate. It seems like many
of
my friends have become more health conscious lately and that is very
helpful. Also, I’m proud of myself for sticking to SB and excersise
because I’ve been stressed out due to university and dealing with a
15
month old. In fact today one of my professors asked if she could send
one of my papers to the whole class as a representative of exactly
what
she wants!!! It just goes to show that we are all capable of so much
more than we expect
I just want to thank everyone for posting all your thoughts and
inspirations on here. I love reading everything you guys write (when
I
have the time)
WE’RE DOING GREAT!!!

Getting ready: hybrid methods?

Saturday, July 1st, 2006

I’m getting ready to start the South Beach diet. Yesterday I added
the Phase 1 Day 1 plan to my meal planning system. (I use Living
Cookbook — www.livingcookbook.com — I’ll be happy to tell you all
more about it in a separate post if you’re interested. It was a
great help when I was doing Weight Watchers.) I noticed that the
menu plan as written is actually quite low in calories at 1092. I’m
sure that’s part of why it works so well in those first couple
weeks. For those who have been in Weight Watchers before, the points
value came to 26.6 for that day. According to Weight Watchers, that
points value would be an appropriate weight loss consumption rate for
someone weighing 200 - 224 pounds. Not bad, really, but it may be a
bit much for some. If one wanted to cut the plan back some, a good
place to do it would be with the fat. According to my software, 59%
of the calories for Day 1 come from fat. I know this isn’t supposed
to be a low fat diet, but that does seem rather high.
I’m wondering if it makes sense to use a hybrid of methods: meal
planning and food balance ideas from South Beach with the points
value system from Weight Watchers. Has anyone here tried that? What
I know is that using the Weight Watchers points system worked well
for me for several months. I think where I began to slide with that
was in letting portion sizes creep up. Since I was eating
everything, just in smaller portions, there was nothing in the
balance of what I was eating to prevent a slide into old habits.
What appeals to me about the South Beach diet is that the food is
balanced in ways that I know will work well for me. I’m the type for
whom too many of the wrong carbs make a good sleep aide! I really do
feel much better when I minimize grains and increase the veggies. I
also feel better when I don’t drink diet sodas. Splenda is a nice
way to give oneself an occasional sweet treat, but I’m convinced that
moderation is necessary with that stuff, too. I’m looking forward to
retraining myself to make healthier choices in my meals, and I think
South Beach will be just the ticket.
