Not trying to TMI, but need help NOW!

Friday, January 26th, 2007

Okay - I’m not trying to share more than I should but I have a concern
about this diet for my husband and I. We’ve been trying to follow the
SB way of eating for about two months now. When we first started we
had trouble in the bathroom department, but chalked it up to our body
needing to get used to a new eating plan. After about three weeks and
it was getting worse I added falx meal to some of our food thinking
maybe we weren’t absorbing enough fiber and tried to drink more
water. Now he is having cramps so bad he has to stop what he’s doing
at work until it passes and having very little elimination. Mine is
so hard that it hurts when I go and I have bleeding when I go. We
also both have gas so bad we’re embarrased to go out. Do you think
this could be the diet in general or do we need to change some way
we’re doing it? Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is
making us want to give up as we feel so bad. Thanks

Hi I’m New and need some guidance

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Hello All,
Well my name is Anassa and I am 23 and live in New York. I am a
diabetic and have been one for 5 years. It was recommended that I
follow the south beach diet. My goal is to be healthy and lose some
weight so that I can control my diabetes without western medicine. Umm
I am sure that this group gets alot of new members but I was wondering
of anyone/someone could help me get started. Thank you so much in
advance. :) Anassa

question about sugar free products

Sunday, January 21st, 2007

I know in the South Beach book it says to limit sugar free treats to
75 calories, because alcohol sugars can bloat you and interfere with
the GI tract.
I have ate a few sugar free fudge sickles and chewed some sugar free
gum (under 75 cals). I felt like I was totally bloated and in pain.
I swear my stomach grew about 3 inches. My pants were so tight that I
couldn’t button them. I will weigh in tommorow to see if I have
gained some weight. I was wondering if anyone else has exerperienced
problems with sugar free stuff.
Does splenda make you bloated too? I generally didn’t eat any
artificial sweetners before South Beach, so maybe my body isn’t
reacting well to them. I did have a diet soda one time per day before
South Beach.
Thanks for your input..RHonda

Question about mock brownies

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

Hi all,
I made these last night and attempted to serve them to my husband -
what a hoot! He ate it, but told me to skip dessert from now on! Ah
well, I tried! (I topped it with a bit of FF cool whip instead of the
reccommended icing)
My question is, can anyone suggest a way to make it “moister” - it was
really dry and crumbly, although I didn’t mind the taste at all! I
don’t think I overcooked it, as I pulled it from the over the minute
the top firmed up.
Do you think adding applesauce would help (P2) ?
Tonight I’m venturing into the world of French Onion Soup - I’ll post
if it works out! I’m trying a lower sodium version with parmasean
crisps instead of the crouton…we’ll see! LOL
Thanks! :) Kim

Mock Raisinettes!

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

These were FABULOUS!!!!!! and I used FF half and half instead of
heavy cream…. :) Kim
1/2 cup fresh blueberries (or purchase the frozen bagged ones from
the grocery)
1-ounce unsweetened chocolate
1/2 cup sugar substitute (recommended: Splenda)
1 tablespoon hot water
1 tablespoon heavy cream, room temperature
Lay cleaned blueberries on a waxed paper lined dish and freeze for at
least 30 minutes.
When blueberries are frozen, make the chocolate ganache:
Place the unsweetened chocolate in a heatproof bowl to melt over a
pan of simmering water. Whisk in sugar substitute, and as needed,
thin with water and cream and blend thoroughly (use more or less than
1 tablespoon, as needed). Turn heat off, leaving bowl over hot water.
Dip frozen blueberries a few at a time into the warm chocolate,
remove quickly with a fork, and put them back on the waxed papered
dish. Spread them around so that they don’t make big bunches, and
then put them back into the freezer for just a couple more minutes.
Alternatively, put the blueberries on a freezer-safe plate, pour the
ganache over top, and then separate with a fork. Put plate in the
freezer for a few more minutes. Serve frozen and eat quickly before
they melt.

Maltitol and other sugar alcohols???

I think this is all Atkins talk. LOL From my understanding, in SB you don’t count carbs at all and just should be sticking to the list of approved foods, right?

Maltitol and other sugar alcohols???

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

The labeling is confusing — “NET CARBS” ???
I’ve seen supposedly SBD-compatible foods that contain Maltitol, which
is a sugar alcohol that is absorbed in the large intestine and has
little effect upon blood sugar. However, it’s technically a
carbohydrate…
Is there an authoritative answer on this? Can a Phase 1 eat foods
containing sugar alcohols?
And while I’m asking, can I really subtract fiber from total carbs to
get “effective carbs” or “net carbs” from the SBD standpoint?
Thanks, gurus

This sounds yummy!!! Does anyone have a recipe? I think that reduced fat triscuits might be ok?

USATODAY.com - Kraft gets South Beach diet’s seal of approval It says here they will be getting the SBD seal of approval.

crockpot oatmeal

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

Thanks for the post about oatmeal. And I love the idea of cooking it
in a crockpot. I have 4 people in my family who love oatmeal and was
wondering if a 2 to 8 ratio would work in a regular size crockpot. -
